This is an example of a misleading headline, a poor product comparison, and broken math.
2019 Mac Pro isn’t the most expensive Mac ever. Not by a long shot.
The premise here is that in 1984 dollars, the original 1984 Mac, priced at $2,495, is more expensive than a new $5,999 Mac Pro in 2019 dollars. That’s the most expensive, right?
But it’s not. And it’s not even close, if you factor in inflation. Many of the early Macs cost much more than $6,000 in today’s dollars.
So, will Apple let me buy a new Mac Pro in 1984 dollars? No.
Remember, the comparisons are for the Mac Pro at a base price of $5,999 sans display, another $6,000 with the display stand, so the total hits $12,000. The original Mac IIfx sold– very few– for almost $9,000 in 1990.
Which would you rather have for the same money?
