Colleague Barbara Marie Brannan on artificial intelligence, bots, and what Apple could do with Siri to leapfrog the competition.
The future is personalized robots with artificial intelligence, and whether these show up as mere voice in a device, or as moving and nearly sentient digital creatures from the movie I, Robot is merely a matter of time… None of these advances will happen overnight, and, at times, the progress will seem glacial instead of incremental. Many of us hope to create a relationship with our devices that borders on friendliness, rather than pure subservience. The robots in I, Robot were subservient but didn’t like it. I’m not certain that near-sentient cloud-based creatures will be more like humans, despite our desires, but I worry that they may grow sufficiently powerful that they decide to clean up planet earth of the pestilence that infects it today.
