Alex Wilhelm posits the arcane notion that Apple is following Microsoft and Windows 8.1 by making OS X Mavericks free. Why? How?
By dropping the cost of OS X updates to zero, Apple is following in Microsoft’s footsteps. Microsoft, of course, recently released its Windows 8.1 update to Windows 8 for free to all Windows 8 users.
The difference, of course, is OS X Mavericks is free to Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion users, while Windows 8 was a paid upgrade. Windows 8.1 is a free update. Wilhem either doesn’t know the difference, which makes him a stupid tech writer, or he knows the difference and is splitting the hair with link bait to drive up page views.
TechCrunch would never do that, right?
