Here’s the deal. For better or worse, until death do us part, web browser cookies, in one form or another, are probably here to stay. We can argue until the cows come home whether cookies offer any benefits to browser users, but blocking cookies entirely makes web browsing a more cumbersome process.
There’s a better way and it’s cleverly named Cookie.
This is one of my favorite setitandforgetaboutit Mac apps. Basically, cookies are an evil necessity, but who wants to browse through a browser list of web sites which have dumped their cookies on you just to get a measure of control? Cookie gives you control, but also lets you browse the web and leave a smaller audit trail.
Cookie has a lot of features and extensive configuration options, but the one I chose is completely automatic. Every time I quit a browser, Cookie erases the cookie trail– Safari, Chrome, Firefox.
Cookies are used by web sites to track what you’ve done and where you’ve been while browsing the web. In most cases, cookies are a requirement for modern browsing, but cookies can be used to track your online actions. Cookie the app deletes cookies each time you quit the browser.
Adobe’s Flash cookies are even worse because they can store more information, restore cookies, and do after the original cookie has been destroyed. But not with Cookie. Some web sites store a local database on your Mac and Cookie finds and gets rid of those, too.
Not only does Cookie work on Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, it’s also effective with Chromium and Opera browsers. Of course, you can opt for a manual removal process– simply click the Cookie icon in the Mac’s Menubar and select the action appropriate for the moment.
Cookie also lets you view which sites leave what kind of cookies on your Mac, and you can control the details with a whitelist, blacklist, and favorites. Personally, I prefer the automated delete which includes removal of all tracking cookies, caches, databases, and even your browsing history.
If you’re at all worried about web security and who might be tracking you, Cookie makes each browser session a cleaner affair. Cookie is well done, a must have on my Mac, and worth every penny.
