This is the most significant development for Apple this century. Steve Ballmer will retired as CEO from Microsoft in the next 12 months. Dan Gallagher on the history:
Ballmer has led the software titan since co-founder Bill Gates stepped down from the top job in 2000. During that time, the size of the business has more than tripled, thanks mostly to growth of the core Windows and Office businesses, as well as new lines such as the Xbox videogame business.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s stock flat-lined for about a decade, but now shows signs of life.
Shares of Microsoft jumped nearly 7% to $34.58 by late Friday morning. The shares are up nearly 30% since the first of the year.
Shareholders have been fantasizing Ballmer’s departure for years. It will be interesting to see which Apple executive Microsoft tries to hire.
