Have Mac, will travel. That’s my traveling motto. Me and my Mac(s) rack up the frequent flier miles every year. One of my greatest fears is that somewhere during those airplane bathroom excursions or airport security checkpoints someone will relieve me of the ownership of my Mac.
How can you track your Mac if it gets lost or stolen?
Rejoice Mac users. There’s an app for that. One of my favorite tools that I hope never to use to the full extent is Obicule’s Undercover for Mac and iOS. This nifty app comes with a hefty price tag but can help you track down a missing Mac.
Undercover resides in the background of Mac OS X and uses Wi-Fi positioning to determine your Mac’s location, then transmits the information to a recovery center. There’s a much less expensive version called Undercover Mobile which runs on your iPhone or iPad and uses push notifications to track and locate your precious device.
Both apps are comprehensive solutions loaded with features you need to retrieve what was once in your possession.
Not every Mac user can afford a commercial protection solution. What if price is an object? For the budget conscious Mac user there’s VUWER, a free theft (or lost) recovery app for the Mac.
Besides price, what makes VUWER different is that is uses built-in Mac OS X commands and AppleScript to function. It captures screen shots, takes iSight camera photos, and grabs geolocation information to help you track the Mac when it disappears from your sight.
VUWER isn’t foolproof because fools are rather ingenious. It starts up when your Mac starts up and monitors a remote computer account online. When your Mac is lost or stolen, you alter the online account and VUWER knows to begin collecting and sending information to you.
VUWER is that simple and elegant.
Unfortunately, thieves that know what they’re doing can bypass pretty much any security and tracking mechanism you employ by formatting the Mac, or keeping it off a public network.
Fortunately, most thieves are not that smart and they’re after a quick return on their investment of your Mac. VUWER, like Orbicule’s Undercover, can help.
Do you have a built-in security system for your Mac? If so, what is it and how does it work?
