It’s one thing to predict what Apple will do next when you’re a long time Apple watcher. It’s something else again when you’re a bona fide Microsoft Apologist who predicts what Apple will do. The former are fans and occasionally correct. The latter are geniuses who always get it wrong but don’t care.
Hit Whoring For Fun And Profit
Enter the world of Paul Thurrott, Microsoft Apologist Extraordinaire. Not content to make a living poaching off the entrails of Windows products, Thurrott often ventures into the alternate universe where the rest of us live and work. Apple’s curated kingdom of products and history. Sayeth, Thurrot:
Apple’s lackluster iPhone 4S garnered more than 1 million preorders in its first 24 hours of availability, though much of that is likely tied to the delayed launch.
Lackluster has to do with a lack of a new form factor to please the critics and grand poo-bah-humbugs of the pundit platform. Thurrott also complained when the iPhone 3GS didn’t break new ground in heaven, and called the iPhone 4’s much ballyhooed and debunked antenna problems a disaster that Apple would fix.
Apple will announce at least one new iPhone next week (there could be a revamped iPhone 4, as well), and although the rumors are all over the map, I have one prediction of my own. And that is that Apple will completely revamp the very much broken external antenna design that it saddled iPhone 4 users with. And that redesign will be present on the iPhone 5 and—if there is one—the “new” version of the iPhone 4 (which I believe the company will release at a lower price point). Beyond that … whatever. The iPhone is yesterday’s smartphone, and though it was fascinating when it came out, Apple has been surpassed by faster-moving and/or more innovative smartphone firms. Including, yes, Microsoft with Windows Phone. Deal with it.
Yes, yes. We understand. This is how to increase hits to your web site– inflammatory lies. It’s all the rage these days. How many people stand in line to buy a Microsoft Phone 7.5-whatever? Why doesn’t Microsoft announce their Windows Phone 7.5-whatever sales figures?
Hit whoring means that a blogger says crazy-assed things to get more hits to a web site. More hits, more readers, more ads, more money. I think that’s what Thurrott is onto, so he’s no crazy lunatic sucking at the Microsoft tit trough. He’s smart. Except he’s not really that smart because he didn’t figure out that Apple’s iPhone 4 sales didn’t drop the past four months, causing all that pent up demand for a new iPhone. And he didn’t figure out that the iPhone 4S antenna would look remarkably (as in exactly) like the predecessor’s antenna, while improving reception.
I pity Thurrott. He spends his life writing wonderful things about Microsoft and Windows. Both are a moving target. Every now and again he writes about Apple, another moving target. The problem is perspective. His jaundiced eye is so out of focus that he can’t recognize that Microsoft’s moving target is descending (IBM surpassed Microsoft as the second most valuable tech company), while Apple’s target is ascending. It’s easier to hit something while it’s flailing on the ground, and much more difficult to hit a target moving swiftly into the sky.
