BlackBerry maker RIM said the company shipped 14.2-million smart phones in the most recent quarter—about 100,000 more units that Apple’s iPhone (quarters overlap, though).
- Record BlackBerry smartphone shipments of approximately 14.2 million grew 40% over the same quarter last year
- Revenue grew 40% over the same quarter last year to $5.5 billion
Stellar results? Not so fast.
The overall smart phone market is up 90-percent in the same time frame. RIM is selling more but remains behind the curve. The key to understanding the unit number is the average selling price (ASP) per smart phone. RIM’s ASP is about $380 vs Apple’s ASP of over $600. Market share doesn’t mean as much as revenue and profit share.
