Are we becoming immune to the Reality Distortion Field emanating from Apple?
Apple today announced that more than 11 million copies of Safari 4 have been downloaded in the first three days of its release, including more than six million downloads of Safari for Windows.
The problem isn’t the numbers, it’s the hype. Safari 4 shows up in the Software Update ready to download on Macs and PCs. Users don’t go looking for it. Safari finds the users. Is Apple somewhat disingenuous by hyping the download stats? Yes. Robert Strohmeyer of PC World agrees:
What is at issue is the ridiculously thin claim that the latest Safari is a wild success on the basis that Apple basically pushed it out to everyone it possibly could, whether they wanted it or not.
I don’t mind the push. I do mind the hype.
