Someone should pay, says The Motley Fool. Why?

Here’s hoping this story ends soon. Steve Jobs went on medical leave, had a liver transplant, and is back to work and doing fine. Meanwhile, Apple didn’t melt down, AAPL went up over 70%. Tim Beyers in The Motley Fool says someone at Apple should pay.

Someone should pay for hiding material information like this. But it’s not obvious that anyone will—except perhaps for those who bought shares without understanding Jobs’ health status.

Hello? The stock is up over 70-percent. It’s still going up. No laws broken. Privacy maintained. Company worked well. Customers happy. Investors happy. Media pundits make so many assumptions, yet have little time to deal with facts.

What do you expect of fools?

Microsoft won't stop selling Word. For now »

Nancy Gohring of IDG News:

An appeals court has granted Microsoft’s request to put off an injunction that could have forced it to stop selling its Microsoft Word software next month.

Bummers, huh? What happened? Back up to my link last month on The last word on Microsoft Word?

Microsoft had appealed a court decision from mid-August that gave it 60 days to stop selling Word products that allow users to create custom XML documents. The ruling, which also includes additional damages Microsoft must pay, stemmed from a patent infringement suit filed in 2007 by i4i. The court has ordered Microsoft to pay more than $290 million in damages in total.

Do you think they’ll settle?

I was the only woman he would ever cheat on »

Quote of the day comes from Merrill Markoe, former Late Night staffer and one of David Letterman’s many past loves:

As you can imagine, this has been a very emotional moment for me because Dave promised me many times that I was the only woman he would ever cheat on.

Priceless.

A Twitter utility for your Mac that doesn't tweet »

How many Twitter apps are there for Mac users? Officially? Too many. There are so many Twitter apps and utilities for Mac users, in fact, that they’ve become specialized. Incoming!, a new Twitter utility, only lets you search on Twitter, not Tweet. Darrell Etherington:

At first, I thought this sounded like only half an idea. There are already some great Twitter clients in the Mac software space, most of which have integrated search functions built right in, so how does Incoming! carve out a niche by offering search alone? What I found out was that depending on your Twitter habits, it might actually be the only app you need.

Silly, right? Not so fast. The vast majority of Twitter users are followers and seldom, if ever tweet. If all you do is follow others and search Twitter, Incoming! could be just what you need.

I know what you mean »

Ellen Messmer, on Women in IT: Success and Struggle:

There’s troubling evidence that some high-tech firms are pushing highly educated female workers to the brink of burn-out in a business atmosphere that expects round-the-clock hours, is brutally dismissive of family life and marginalizes them in a sea of highly educated men.

That is likely the case in any field where men traditionally dominate, and is not limited purely to those in technical fields.

Researchers found a third of the women interviewed had decided to delay having children in order to achieve their career goals, while 18% of men indicated the same. And for the sake of their jobs, 9% of the surveyed women decided to forego children completely, compared with 3.5% of men.

Again, that same statistical trend will show up in other fields where women make up a minority.

One analyst who has watched the world of high-tech and executive management for a long time say women professionals do tend to bring a certain “sensibility,” especially in communications skills often defined as “female traits” that men should be more inclined to emulate, not disparage.

Women often have more of a willingness to admit when they’re wrong.
