A Cheap Mac Does Not A Bargain Make
Sunday, April 20, 2008
What is it that makes a non-event become headline news? A small Miami company tried to sell so-called Mac ‘clones’ for $399. Will cloned Macs become big sellers? Who is the buyer? What problems will unsupported clones cause? So many questions, so few answers.

And now they’re back up again, selling their Mac clone. It would be great to get a review of one of their machines. They look like basic cheap PC mini tower boxes, so I assume they’re fiddling with the BIOS so that OS X runs. That cannot be a good long term solution. Still, it’s cheaper than a Mac mini.

Looks like Psystar didn’t make it. That didn’t last long. What? A week?
You’re right, though, I think Apple is doing Mac customers a disservice by not providing an affordable mini tower Mac. I would buy a quad core mini tower with a couple of slots and room for two hard drives. The MacPro is nice but very expensive these days. The iMac just doesn’t have the extra muscle.
