Even your Mac can’t keep you healthy

Remarkably, germs don’t seem to care that Mac users are special. Windows users get worms and viruses and the occasional Trojan horse. Mac users get the true joy of computing, which doesn’t mean much when germs attack.

Thankfully, my Mac is working fine, though suffering from lack of use for the past month or so. For the first time in my life I’ve been ravaged by true germ warfare. Germs against me. For awhile, the germs were winning.

It started with what I thought was just a nasty cold I caught at a friend’s wedding back in the spring. The story is common. I got better. I got worse. Then I got very worse.

Unfortunately, I didn’t pay much attention to what my body was trying to tell me. I kept working, didn’t bother with a visit to the doctor (who wants to go there? That’s where all the sick people are!), didn’t even bother with medicine.

The next thing I knew was that my cough became much worse. I developed a fever that wouldn’t go away. After awhile I didn’t know who I was, where I was, or what day it was. Pneumonia can do that; even to young, healthy, vibrant Mac users.

When it was all over I was tired, weak, hungry, and 15 pounds lighter. I missed Apple’s iPhone 3G launch and the wonderful feeling of standing in line for hours just so my phone browses faster and tells me where I am. But I watched it all on television.

I’m better now, though I struggle to remember where all the keys are on my Mac’s keyboard. I seem to have forgotten that Mighty Mouse has a right mouse button with context sensitive menu selections. That’s new, right?

Delirium must have side effects.

Through it all my family kept a constant vigil over my bedside while my Mac continued to fill the inbox with email. I should be done with it in time to comment on the general election.
