RIP, Macintosh

Remember Dan Lyons, also known as Fake Steve, also known as a hack writer for Newsweek, once a respected news magazine?

The future of Apple is no longer centered around the Macintosh.

Duh. How is this news? Or, even a revelation? Or, is it just more hit whore flame bait from a failed journalist, failed satire writer, failed television show celebrity?

You Mac guys just got kicked to the curb, relegated to the steaming dung heap of the past. The future, for Apple, is all about iPhones and iPads, and, more important, the operating system software that powers them—the sexy new iOS 4, which these days seems to be getting most of Steve’s attention.

Uh, yeah. We knew that already, Dan, and we’ve been writing about it for awhile. It’s so nice of you to join the party; late as usual.

To be sure, Apple won’t kill off the Mac. But it will keep pumping up the capabilities of iOS 4 so that iPads and other future mobile devices can displace the Mac… Low-cost mobile devices powered by the iOS are going to chew their way up into the Macintosh market space.

Who’s behind this travesty? None other than Apple’s Steve Jobs, the man behind the Mac:

Steve has changed. He’s not the Steve we used to know. Or maybe he’s always been like this, and we just didn’t see it.

I just wish the new Fake Steve was like the old Fake Steve. Funny. Insightful. Worth a read.
